When it comes to relationships, society can send mixed messages. In one sense, marriage and relationships are seen as the ultimate goal in life, and anyone on a different path is seen as missing out. On the other hand, the high value placed on independence can cause some to view marriage and relationships as an obstacle.

Neither of these views offers a balanced perspective. Whether you are single, dating or married, it’s important to have a firm grasp of where you are in life. Here are some ways to do that.

1. Make the most of your relationships with friends and family.

Relationships are a vital part of life. It’s important to cultivate strong ones regardless of whether they are platonic or romantic. Having a strong support network is extremely beneficial as you tackle the ups and downs of life.

2. Spend time chasing your passions and dreams.

If you find that you have more free time than you’d like, consider that now could be an opportunity to pursue one of your passions. Is there something new you’re interested in learning? Is there a career move you’ve been dreaming about taking? This could be the best time to take the leap and do something new!

3. Spend time getting to know yourself.

Be intentional to explore more of who you are. Try taking some personality tests like the Enneagram or the Myers-Briggs.* This can help you to better care for yourself and for those around you.

4. Make time to travel.

Whether it’s lying on a beach, hiking in the mountains or exploring a new culture, gather some friends and make some memories! Make sure you’re taking time to do the things you’re excited about.

5. Grow in your independence.

Are there life skills you wish you had that you never learned? Learn to do those things on your own. Take a cooking class, have a friend teach you to do your taxes. Who knows, you may fall in love with a new hobby.

6. Take more risks.

Take advantage of being accountable to only yourself. Right now, there are few other people who are affected by your big decisions. Do you want to make a cross-country move? Are you looking to quit your job and start your own business? Do you want to do a gap year and travel abroad? Take a risk and jump into a new adventure!

There are many other positive things about being single.

When was the last time you took a step back to appreciate the good things in life? It’s easy to take them for granted, but when we truly appreciate what we already have, life feels so much richer.
